8:00am Category: Volunteer Opportunities[8:00am] Small Craft Safety - Canoeing Moving Water Course
This course provides information and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to small craft emergencies on rivers. This course will prepare you for water emergencies by teaching you how to protect yourself while assisting others. Adults (age 18 & up) who successfully complete this course will be certified to teach canoeing on lakes to girls and other adults. Girls (ages 16-17) may only be secondary instructors. Certification is valid for three years. **The training group will leave Camp Butterfly waterfront at 8 a.m. Training will take place on the Meramec River after approximately one hour travel time. Ending time depends on river conditions.** Who: Adults ages 18 years and up; Girl Scouts ages 16 years & up. Prerequisite: Completion of a Small Craft Safety – Canoeing Course or equivalent. Participants must be able to paddle a canoe forward, backward, and turn a circle. They also must be able to swim 25 yards with/without wearing a life jacket and tread water for one minute. Cost: $40 (includes canoe rental & course cost). Min/Max: 6/15. Note: Please bring food for your meals, swimsuit, towel, hat, water/water bottle, life jacket (if you prefer your own), water shoes, sunscreen, paper, pencil/pen, bungee cord, rope, milk jug and Small Craft Safety book. Deadline to register is 5/2/13. Eagle’s Nest unit at Camp Butterfly is available as lodging for Small Craft Safety-- Moving Water participants on May 25.
