Grant Update:In collaboration with the Illinois Youth Center (IYC) Pere Marquette facility, GSSI is pleased to announce an upcoming “Youth in Need” program. This program, funded by a Girl Scouting in Detention Centers grant from Girl Scouts of the USA, is slated to begin January 2011.
GSSI is committed to providing a leadership experience to all girls. Through the “Youth in Need” program, girls housed at IYC-Pere Marquette will be able participate in Girl Scout programs twice a month at the facility. Program themes will cover such topics as overcoming social peer pressure, emotional and physical health, managing emotions and building positive relationships. The goal of the program is to bring the Girl Scout experience to the girls at the facility in an effort to help them build courage, confidence and character.
“We are very excited to be partnering with the Illinois Youth Detention Center – Pere Marquette with our ‘Youth in Need’ program,” said Jackie Gomez, Director of Volunteer and Staff Training for GSSI. “Through our programs we will have the opportunity to reinforce positive lifestyle changes as well as fostering self esteem for the girls at IYC-Pere Marquette. We hope to give the girls the tools and experience necessary for building positive life skills.”
GSSI plans to reach approximately 70 girls over the course of the year-long program. Two Membership Development Managers from GSSI will facilitate the program. In addition, GSSI will work with area colleges and universities to form an internship experience around the “Youth in Need” program.

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois is a Proud Partner of United Way. Each year, GSSI receives monetary support from various United Ways throughout southern Illinois. Without United Way’s continued support of Girl Scouts, we would not be able to provide as many wonderful programs, services and activities for our 14,000 girl members and dedicated adult volunteers. Thanks, United Way!
