On Oct. 6-8, area Girl Scouts represented Southern Illinois at Girl Scouts' 54th National Convention and National Council Session in Columbus, Ohio. These events occur every three years and bring together thousands of girl and adult members of the Girl Scout movement from around the nation.
This year's convention, named “G.I.R.L. 2017,” featured hands-on activities, exciting performances and high profile speakers including Barbara Pierce Bush, Chelsea Clinton, Gabby Douglas and Mae Jemison.
Along with the fun, hundreds of Girl Scout delegates from across the nation represented their councils as part of the National Council Session. At this meeting, delegates are responsible for influencing the strategic direction of the Movement by providing guidance to the Girl Scouts of the USA Board of Directors, whether that be in the form of electing new board members, amending the Constitution, or proposing positive change.
The National Council is composed of delegates elected by each Girl Scout council, with responsibilities that include electing a board of directors and a national board development committee, amending the constitution and acting on proposals and influencing the strategic direction of the Girl Scout Movement by providing guidance to the National Board.
