Girl Scouts are invited to explore the underground world of the
Illinois Cavern System in Waterloo, IL during this guided caving
adventure, Wednesday, Aug. 5th,
2026! This experience allows
troops and groups to explore safely while practicing teamwork,
problem-solving, and outdoor skills in a unique natural
environment. Spots are limited and cost includes a fun patch! Cost is
$7 per person. Non-participating adults do not need to register, but
must remain onsite for the duration of the event session.
This
experience will be led by a knowledgeable guide with the Illinois
Caverns State Natural Area. The guide will support groups throughout
the exploration, offering insight into cave features, conservation
practices, and safe navigation of the environment. Participation is
open to all Girl Scout Cadettes - Ambassadors, and all groups must
follow Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints. This is not a drop off
event. All Girl Scout leaders and troop volunteers must remain onsite
for the duration of the event, even if they do not participate in the
caving experience.
Two sessions are available:
10 am - 12
pm
1 pm - 3 pm
A 3rd session may be added if the first two sell out. Waitlist spots
will be utilized to fill session 3 on a first-come-first-served
basis.
All caving participants should come prepared for a cave
environment that includes wet, muddy, and uneven terrain. Proper
attire and equipment are absolutely required for this experience,
including sturdy closed-toe shoes, a bike or climbing helmet, and 2
reliable light sources per participant.
This guided adventure is
a great opportunity for Girl Scouts to safely experience one of
Illinois' natural treasures while learning about stewardship and
conservation. Participants should be ready to get a little muddy, stay
curious, and enjoy an unforgettable underground journey. Space is
limited, register early!
