Congratulations to Vicky Birchem from St. Louis! She is being recognized with Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois' Volunteer Spotlight Award for her service with Service Unit 201 O'Fallon/Shiloh.
Volunteer Spotlight Awards celebrate volunteers who are honored by their peers for living the Girl Scout Law. Here is why Vicky is being recognized as a shining example of a great volunteer:
"Vicky is a Lifetime Girl Scout, having earned her Trifecta - Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. She has remained involved in Girl Scouts after graduating college and beginning her own career. When the opportunity was presented to her to volunteer for service unit 201’s "Mini" Day Camp, Vicky instantly said yes!
Vicky quickly arranged for time off from work, began exploring ideas and working with fellow volunteer Karlene on the concept of a "mini" day camp. Through their combined creative efforts, Vicky organized a three-day activity for camp - having the girls create their own fairy garden! Vicky's enthusiasm and energy were infectious and the girls absolutely loved this activity!
The first day, each Girl Scout in each unit created their garden space using natural and creative supplies. Each day, each girl added more details to their gardens with the hope that a fairy would enjoy their garden enough to come and live in it. When the girls headed home after the final day of camp, each had successfully created a fairy garden worthy of a fairy!
Vicky also taught the campers Girl Scout songs each morning and assisted the units throughout camp - making her an indispensable camp volunteer! The campers of Service Unit 201’s "mini" Day Camp will be celebrating Vicky's impact on them for years to come, each time they sing a song she taught them. Vicky spent her time at day camp encouraging girls, helping them to tap into their creativity all while sharing stories and her love for Girl Scouts."
