Congratulations to Mary Marie Buchanan from O'Fallon! She is being recognized with Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois' Volunteer Spotlight Award for her service with Service Unit 201 O'Fallon/Shiloh.
Volunteer Spotlight Awards celebrate volunteers who are honored by their peers for living the Girl Scout Law. Here is why Mary is being recognized as a shining example of a great volunteer:
"Mary is an adult, Lifetime Girl Scout, who graduated in May 2021. She has been volunteering at various Girl Scout events and camps for several years and is great with Girl Scouts of all ages. Mary is attentive, patient and very kind – qualities in need when working with excited Girl Scouts.
Mary volunteered to assist with the quickly planned Service Unit 201 “mini” Day Camp once she heard there was a need for volunteers upon her return home from her first year at college. Mary seamlessly integrated into the leadership of the Junior unit, by assisting, guiding, listening, and keeping track of 20 excited Junior Girl Scouts.
The extreme heat advisory never fazed Mary. In fact, she never looked frazzled or even the slightest bit warm. She is calm in the chaos, focused and attentive, immensely kind and caring. Mary was an amazing addition to the Junior unit leadership team at camp!
Having known Mary for several years, there was a great sense of comfort knowing she was with the Junior unit. Mary’s vast experience with being a camper and assisting at camp and other Girl Scout events ensured the girls attending the service unit “mini” camp would be in good hands and have a wonderful time!"
