Congratulations to Penny Pejka from O'Fallon! She is being recognized with Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois' Volunteer Spotlight Award for her service with Service Unit 201 O'Fallon/Shiloh.
Volunteer Spotlight Awards celebrate volunteers who are honored by their peers for living the Girl Scout Law. Here is why Penny is being recognized as a shining example of a great volunteer:
"Penny is the epitome of a Girl Scout volunteer. She is dedicated, self-less, generous, kind, dependable, and truly competent - just to name a few attributes! Penny has been the service unit’s Camp Cook for decades! She is truly an expert and the only on you want in the kitchen for camp. She accommodates any and all food concerns, allergies, and requirements. She provides fun, well-balanced, nutritional meals, and no camper ever leaves hungry. Penny runs the kitchen like a well-oiled machine and looks effortless in doing so!
When the idea for the Service Unit "mini" Day Camp came up, Penny ensured her schedule accommodated the dates for camp. She became a member of the O'Fallon Sportsman's Club (a requirement for usage of the venue) and was even ready to volunteer for their chili cook-off fundraiser if need be! Penny shops for the food, preps and cooks, serves and cleans up - she does it all and always with a smile! This year's theme of "mini" didn't challenge Penny at all. She quickly incorporated the theme and served mini meatball subs, mini sandwiches, mini pizzas for lunches and mini snacks every day!
In addition to Penny's amazing culinary acumen, Penny also steps up when there is a need with leaders. Recently, a request was made to the service unit team to support and assist a new troop leader with her initial parent/troop meeting. Penny volunteered to be there, squeezing it in between her other meetings, bringing supplies to the new leader, and leading the brand-new Girl Scouts in learning the Girl Scout Promise with an activity so the new leader could talk with the parents.
Penny is a Girl Scout treasure and truly makes Service Unit 201 successful in providing an amazing Girl Scout experience to both Girl Scouts and leaders alike!
