Reminder: Medication Safety Tips
Welcome, summertime! From GSofSI Day & Overnight camp opportunities to Service Unit/Troop trips, this season is full of outdoor adventures. While preparing for camp and other outdoor fun, don't forget to think about your plan for administering and storing medicine.
If you are attending a council-run program, staff will have you fill out the necessary forms and store the medication safely. If you are going on a campout with your Troop or Service Unit, and there won’t be a camp nurse present, here are a few tips to follow to keep girl and adults safe:
Keep prescription and over-the-counter meds locked in a bag/box. Any container you can lock with a key/combination lock will work.
This does not apply to medications such as inhalers, EpiPens, insulin, etc. These types of medicines need to be carried by the girl, if she is old enough to know how to properly administer the medication, or an adult that has the dosage and administration information.
Keep all medications in their original packaging.
Keep medications in a temperature-controlled environment.
Obtain parent permission and instructions to administer over-the-counter and prescription medications before the trip.
Make sure you have a clear schedule of when girls need to take their prescribed medication and the correct dosage.
