Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois congratulates Anna Kennedy from Waterloo, Illinois for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout—a designation she earned by organizing a campout for younger Girl Scouts.
When she realized that some young Girl Scouts had never experienced camping, Anna wanted to create an opportunity that would be a welcome introduction to the great outdoors. She got to work planning a campout for girls in kindergarten through third grade that focused on building skills and having fun in a low-stress environment.
Anna chose a campsite that was close to home where girls could stay in cabins. She planned activities that were easy to accomplish within an hour, which helped maintain girls’ interest while providing plenty of time for rest and relaxation. Anna’s goal was to make camping such a fun adventure for the Girl Scout Daisies and Brownies so that they would be excited to attend future campouts. Mission accomplished!
Gold Award Girl Scouts become innovative problem-solvers, empathetic leaders, confident public speakers, and focused project managers. They learn resourcefulness, tenacity, and decision-making skills, giving them an edge personally and professionally. As they take action to transform their communities, Gold Award Girl Scouts gain tangible skills and prove they’re the leaders our world needs.
“I learned how important it is to have a good team. My project would not have been successful without a strong team helping me along the way,” said Anna when reflecting on her Gold Award project.
Anna is the daughter of Dan and Kendra Kennedy. She is currently a sophomore at Waterloo High School. Anna is a Trifecta Girl Scout who has earned the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.
